Pothencode : Manuj Brahmapad from Kavadiyar captivated audiences at the Santhigiri Fest with his unique pyrography exhibition. Pyrography, the art of creating intricate designs on wood or leather by burning the surface, has found a passionate advocate in Manuj. His work at the fest, where he lights a fire on wooden planks to create striking images, has left spectators in awe.

Manuj began exploring pyrography during the Covid lockdown, though his artistic journey started much earlier in childhood. He discovered this rare art form through media exposure, and since then, his fascination with painting “with fire” has made him one of the few artists to embrace this technique. A distinctive aspect of his work is that he uses a self-made soldering tool to burn his designs onto the board. As Manuj notes, the process requires immense precision, as any mistake is permanent and cannot be erased.

The stall showcasing Manuj’s artwork was inaugurated by Ashram General Secretary Swami Gururatnam Jnana Thapasvi, who praised the diverse styles and depth of expression in his pieces, stating that such originality sets both the art and the artist apart.

Among the subjects Manuj has brought to life through pyrography are Jesus Christ, Buddha, B. R. Ambedkar, Albert Einstein, Bob Marley, Partha Bose, and others. He is currently working on a depiction of Osho, etched onto a Wild Jack plank. His creative journey is supported by his friend Rajitha Brahma, who has been by his side throughout the exhibition.

At this year’s Santhigiri Fest, Manuj has also curated a broader exhibition featuring around 100 paintings, including works in acrylic, gum, mural, and canvas art forms.
