During the decades when the age old spiritual concepts were termed unscientific and mere philosophical speculations, Navajyotisree Karunakara Guru asked some of his learned disciples to start research on the spiritual experience of Santhigiri Ashram, which He founded. When Guru suggested inviting all scientists and explaining to them, initially they were little skeptic due to the prevailing attitude of scientific fraternity. But even during those decades of scientific embargo on spirituality they had conviction in the words of Guru that the scientists would accept spiritual phenomena as a field of scientific research.

Today, after many years Guru spoke this, the scientific community has, knowingly or unknowingly, fumbled upon the foundations of spiritual science while exploring the question of existence.  Today, the forays into the cosmic secrets by the modern physics, astronomy and genetic engineering have given credence to some of the perennial questions and spiritual concepts. Therefore, when Santhigiri Ashram approached SIRO for recognition of spiritual concepts and experience for its research, the scientists had less difficulty in accepting them.  Santhigiri Ashram thus was accorded Recognition by the Department of Scientific & Industrial Research, Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization vide Declaration No. 14/435/2006-TU-V dated 13.12.2006. The recognition is for conducting research in Social Science and Industrial Research.
