H.H Smt. Sonia Gandhi laid the foundation stone for Santhigiri Research Foundation
UPA Chairperson and Congress President Sonia Gandhi visited Santhigiri Ashram on Friday, 15th Feb,08, to lay the foundation stone for Santhigiri Research Foundation.. Smt.Gandhi offered prayers at the ashram and also met the head of the ashram Janani Amritha Jnana Thapaswini.
Smt Sonia Gandhi said that the progress made in science and technology should be used to wipe out discrimination in society. A life based on values is an important as advancement in science and technology. They should be linked. A society should evolve which draws from the benefits of scientific advancements spirituality and modernity. The efforts made by the late Karunakara Guru to wipe out religious and casteist discrimination in society were laudable.
Advancement in science and technology should help to ameliorate the conditions of the less-privileged and should not widen the chasm between the rich and the poor. Research should widen the frontiers of knowledge and bring about tangible differences in the life of the poor.
While cultivating a scientific temper among the youth, they should be made to inculcate social values and basic principles of secularism too. Ms.Gandhi said that the research institute of the ashram had been blending spirituality and tradition with science. Karunakara Guru, founder of the Ashram, was one of the remarkable personalities of the 20th century. He was a social reformer and spiritual leader who rejected customs and fanaticism.
While religion had become a cause for triggering conflict, Kerala had set a unique model in religious amity. Beliefs and religions peacefully coexisted in Kerala. This was mainly due to the teachings of social reformers such as Karunakara Guru, She said.
The international Ayurveda and Siddha research centre of the Ashram at Kottayam, which was dedicated to the nation-by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in February 2006, has given a scientific base to both disciplines. The rich repository of traditional medicines should be effectively used for curing maladies, she said.

Chandiroor – the first disease free Village |
| |
Chandiroor
in Alapuzha district is a beautiful village blessed by the birth of
Navajyotisri Karunakara Guru. This village consists of 3000 houses. A
team of medical students and experts from Santhigiri Siddha Medical
College under the supervision of Dr. Jagannathan, BSMS, MD (Siddha),
PhD, conducted a door to door medical survey in this village. The
survey aimed at identifying the health problems of the villagers and at
formulating a long term free health care program for the villagers.
In the survey a detailed health report of 2400 patients was
prepared. In the subsequent examination and analysis of the health
reports, it was found that Thyroid related problems and Filariasis are
endemic in this area. Other diseases detected are Rheumatic complaints,
respiratory ailments, skin disorders, diabetes mellitus, piles, hyper
tension etc.
Around 600 patients have been identified for follow up treatment for
one year. Others will be treated as general cases in the medical camps.
As part of the project, all the patients in the village will be issued a
Health Card for receiving free prolonged treatment. Though the project
is intended to be for one year, it may be extended according to the
situation. Every month a team of
doctors from Santhigiri Siddha Medical College will go and examine the
patients and will distribute medicines free of cost.
Probable reasons for the above said diseases are water contamination
due to ice plants, prawn peeling and coconut husk processing units,
water stagnation which breeds mosquitoes, lack of sanitation facilities,
personal hygiene and pure drinking water facilities.
The ultimate objective of the project is to make Chandiroor a
disease-free village.
The inauguration of ‘Chandiroor Siddha Village' project will be
conducted by Dr. Anbumani Ramdoss, Central Minister for Health and
Family Welfare on 5th September, 2006, on the day of Onam festival in
Kerala.
