AYURVEDA
AYURVEDA SYSTEM OF MEDICINE
Ayurveda, is the health science of India from B.C. 5000 onwards. The word Ayurveda is composed of two Sanskrit terms viz. ayus meaning life-span and veda meaning knowledge and taken together it means the science of life.
The term Ayurveda encompasses not only science but spirituality and philosophy as well. Ayurveda believes that every individual is a unique phenomenon. The individual is indivisible from the cosmos. Whatever is there in the macrocosm the same thing exists in the microcosm. Every individual is a manifestation of cosmic consciousness.
The vibration of pure consciousness produces the sound AUM. From this sound the five basic elements are produced- EARTH, WATER, FIRE, AIR and ETHER. Further more these basic elements are manifested into three biological humors known as VATHA, PITHA and KAPHA. These humors (tridoshas) when in non equilibrium cause ill health or disease. Ayurveda seeks to restore the balance.
SIDDHA
SIDDHA SYSTEM OF MEDICINE
Siddha System of Medicine developed by Siddhars - popular among the Dravidian population - is practiced from time immemorial in South India, especially in Tamil Nadu. The Siddhars were eighteen in number and have given not only their knowledge of medicine but also their philosophy to their successors in different periods of history. Siddha, is the earliest medical science that laid stress on positive health, a harmonious blending of physical, mental, social, moral and spiritual welfare of an individual.
In Siddha totally 64 classifications of medicinal preparations are available (32 classifications of internal medicines plus 32 classifications of external medicines). In Siddha, medicines are prepared from natural sources like medicinal plants, metals, salts, mineral, arsenic animal sources and products.
